Travels: Incredible Krabi

More information: Tourism Thailand | Cooking Classes

Most people would immediately think of Bangkok or Phuket at the mention of Thailand, but there is another place that is worth checking out: Krabi. Krabi (pronounced kraa-bee) is a picturesque tourist destination in the southern part of the country. It is known for its scenic mountain views, stunning islands with flourishing coral reefs, golden beaches, intricate cave systems and a landscape that is dominated by beautiful limestone hills and cliffs that meander along the coast.

It is said that Krabi has one of the most photogenic sunsets in all of Thailand and Jackie Chan can probably attest to that. In 2003, Jackie Chan and his crew shot a scene in Krabi for the movie Around the World in 80 Days (based on Jules Verne’s 1873 novel of the same name). Other films that had Krabi as a backdrop include Mortal Kombat (1995), Star Wars Episode III (2005) and many others. Its ability to lure international films in itself is a testament to the remarkable beauty of this paradise.

Apart from the natural attractions that draw both tourists and film makers alike, Krabi also offers a vibrant and worth-to-fly-for food culture. Not surprisingly, being near the sea, Krabi has a dazzling array of fresh seafood to choose from. Curries are especially good here and you should try the southern Thai dry curry which is a type of curry without coconut milk. Another bonus point is that food in Krabi is incredibly cheap, so you really are spoilt for choices. The good thing is you can walk the calories off with a stroll along the beach afterwards. But then, really, who’s counting calories when they’re on a holiday? 😛

Seriously good food by the beach

One last thing worth mentioning here, which is probably not the most conventional thing to do on a holiday, is cooking classes! Yes, I too don’t go looking for cooking lessons when on a vacation but the last time I came here, my friends dragged me to one and it was super fun! One class typically lasts for about half a day, and you get to cook (and eat) 3 – 4 Thai dishes. I can’t remember exactly which one we went to but if you google it, you’ll find a number of options at pretty reasonable prices. So, why not go for it?

Like a book, an indication of whether it’s good is if you read it twice. I have been to Krabi twice now, and I will definitely go again.
